- Mama Desti was born in Madagascar in 1899. At the age of 14 she and her family left their hometown for the United States. They got as far as the island of Haiti. Impoverished by their travels, the family lived in Haiti for 10 years before they finally got to the United States.
The art of doll-making witchery was never lost to the family. Mama Desti, who died in Haiti at age 19 just before her 20 birthday, handed down the art of doll witchery.
Tanya, Mama Desti's great-great-great-grand daughter now carries on the art, passed down through the ages. Tanya never knew Mama Desti but feels her spirit, her presence everyday. It is Mama Desti's spirit that Tanya breathes into each and everyone of the dolls as she creates and blesses them. The dolls are featureless, because Mama Desti said that through concentration, imagination and personal blessing, they can be whatever you want them to be.
One of the ways she brings peace to people’s lives is to do their portraits in the form of dolls.
